Caring for your purchase

In general, the care required for your bowl, board or other wood item will depend heavily on its use and/or the finish that was applied. Basic information is below, but if you have any questions about a bowl that you own, intend to purchase, or would like made please reach out to me directly and I can provide additional information and care instructions. I am also available anytime to resand, retouch-up, or refinish any purchased product.

General care guidelines

  • Do not microwave any wood products.

  • Do not put any wood products in the dishwasher.

  • If required, use a very small amount of soap to clean your product - and once rinsed be sure to remove from water and dry it off quickly.

  • Do not soak or submerge your wood product under water for any prolonged period of time. Direct contact with water should be kept at a minimum.

  • In general, the less contact with water - the longer your item can go without the need for touch-up or additional oil.

  • Avoid allowing the wood to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time - as sunlight and heat can alter the woods coloration and shape.

  • If your product has an oil finish and begins to lose it's luster, any food safe oil (listed below) can be applied and rubbed into the wood.

  • Products finished with dyes and/or lacquer should not be considered 'food safe', and can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

  • As always, if you have any questions about the finish applied to a specific product - either purchased or for sale on the site - reach out to me directly and I will be happy to answer thoroughly.

Product finishes

Oil Finishes

Oil finishes include finishes such as walnut oil, tung oil, mineral oil, sanding sealer, abrasive paste, Odie's oil (a personal favorite), etc., and perhaps topcoat with wax. These are generally food safe and non-toxic, and can be easily re-applied when needed and after repeated use.

Lacquer Finishes

I use a variety of different lacquer finishes, depending on the piece. Lacquers are typically not food-safe and bowls with lacquer applied to the interior should be considered as 'decorative' only. For this reason, I often apply lacquer to the exterior but not to the interior - but this varies from piece to piece.

Milk Paint

I purposefully use milk paint quite a bit since it is considered food-safe and non-toxic. Although mainly applied to the exterior of bowls, this paint can be applied to interiors, handles, etc - and then finished with one of the oils listed in the column to the left. A 100% organic product with fantastic durability.

Acrylic Paint & Dyes

Similar to lacquer finishes, most paint should not be considered 'food safe'.  I usually restrict paint application to the exterior for this reason. Painted exteriors and dyes are usually then sealed with a gloss, semi-gloss or matte lacquer to preserve the finish and for protection.

Shipping

No one likes to pay for shipping, myself included. But shipping products made of solid wood  can be expensive, especially with some of the heavier pieces. I have done my best to keep shipping costs down, but there's just no avoiding a higher price tag than I'd ideally like. All items will ship for a $20 flat rate fee.

All items will be packed securely and shipped within 3 business days of purchase.

Alternatively, if you live in the Greenville, North Carolina area and you would rather pick up your bowl and avoid shipping costs, you will have the option to choose "Pick up" at checkout.  Please be sure to select this option prior to payment to avoid the $20 shipping charge.

Special orders and commissions

Although I typically create pieces based on a number of factors: what wood is currently dry/available, trying a new design or finish, wood species, or just inspiration in general - I'm likewise open to discussing one-off pieces.

Looking for something specific? Have an idea in mind? Want a particular species of wood, or a certain shape of bowl or board? Feel free to reach out to me directly and let me know what you have in mind. I'm happy to share with you what species I currently have in inventory, to discuss design, and to get a sense of the kind of piece you'd like created.
